The youthful hordes were harshly exploited as a labour force in the booming textile industry. However he was the victim of a victim. His tale extends beyond two cities and there were some Oliver Twists along the way. Brian was born In Tasmania on May 24, ; a dozen years before his parents Norman and Mabel welcomed their youngest child Sharon into the world.
In the interim, present day trainers Lawrence and Noel had also entered the fold of the non-horse-racing family that resided in Innisfail and Cairns. At three, Mayfield-Smith permanently absorbed the sensual aura stimulated by a visit to a bakery and its wonderful cart horses. A couple of years later he felt the soft touch of a circus elephant as it took a sweet from his hand. His dog Boxer was a great companion too. If I want peace, my first reaction is to go to an animal I know, rather than go to a human being.
The butcher Kevin Luce came to the party with Global Bid, another successful debutant whose four wins from the initial eight assignments included the Mareeba Cup. Mayfield-Smith scrimped so money from his sugar loading job could be directed to buying a neddy called Grey Pilot. Bright prospects were shattered when the horse accidentally perished in a violent storm. Furthermore, it could have been darker curtains for the sometimes feisty fledgling conditioner if steward Tom Carlton had not cut him some slack.
Brian had physically seen to some culprits who were harassing his parents at a race meeting and then transgressed again when embroiled in a bar room incident. Brian struck immediate pay dirt when the horse obliged at his Cluden Park debut. Coincidentally Mayfield-Smith was based for a while at an out-station known as Mullala, the name of the Stradbroke winner and he was once marooned on a property owned by the Barnes family, the name associated with the Melbourne Cup placegetter Tails.
After a joyless twenty-first birthday in the gulf country, Brian took a wet season job at the Cairns abattoir.
Racing – Nov 2012
Workmates there conversed about racing, a world that was totally foreign to him. He explained the role of a stablehand and the horse lover found the concept appealing.
Mention was made of Brisbane trainer Tony Mazzaglia and, totally on spec, Brian headed south. Luckily the raw rookie was taken on and Mazzaglia at one point flew him to Sydney to help apprentice Tony Erhart bring horses back north.
An ill at ease Mayfield-Smith briefly picked up the traces again at Kamilaroi before another stint with thoroughbreds at Panorama Stud near Allora. The independent spirit lived at Cannon Park track in a caravan.
Her initial five outings returned three wins and two seconds, and, after an injury induced letup she scored six more times including the Gordonvale Cup. But Torbadol grabbed the headlines, scoring at his first attempt in town. He brought home the bacon six times from his introductory seven outings.
Brian saddled 14 winners in his opening year in Brisbane. Tiger Town proved highly promising and was aimed for the Epsom Handicap, five months after being Novice-eligible. Although a tad wayward in the straight he scored at his Sydney debut in a Randwick mile Welter, landing a six figure plonk in chalking up his tenth victory from 17 attempts. Smith, not for the last time, infuriated Mayfield-Smith, by trying to poach Tiger Town.
The ownership stuck fast but relocation to Sydney for the trainer and his top galloper was required. The duo defied all the challengers until the last gasp. The Doncaster was in the sights for Tiger Town. Triumphs in the Frederick Clissold, first up at Canterbury, and the Ajax Stakes at Rosehill were impressive as was the narrow Warwick Farm loss over metres under 67 kilograms.
Unfortunately, as favourite, Tiger Town was injured in his second assault on a rich Randwick mile event. The stallion faded slightly for regular rider Peter Cook.
The rails run secured by Glen Killen on Sir Wisp was a factor in the neck defeat. The great mare Maybe Mahal was next in. Sesamoid damage was detected before he could contest the Doomben 10, The gifted trainer had prepared all the progeny of the illustrious Dark Jewel, dam of the likes of Baguette, Cabochon, and the Dickens filly Lucie Manette whose daughter Of Two Cities was the Flight Stakes runner-up. Mabel, the staunchest of proponents, passed away in The widow of Stan Fox, who had sweated his way from blacksmith to coal mining magnate, still had around horses on the books with around 60 in work.
The bloodstock was mainly home bred with quantity outshining the depth of quality. Nebo Lodge had the space and Mrs Fox agreed to arrangements that saw Lapointe, Robert Sangster, outside owners and herself all accommodated there with Mayfield-Smith.
The place was massively renovated. Mayfield-Smith was chuffed to receive written commendation from Sangster, an international force for the previous decade with the likes of The Minstrel, Alleged, Beldale Ball, Detroit and Golden Fleece. His heart was set on footwear made of a precious metal. The Little General made no private or public concessions. There were five years of halcyon days.
Handy Proverb, part-owned by Lapointe, went close to a clean sweep of the east coast Derbies. Bonecrusher, the Kiwi star who had a clearer passage in the classic at Randwick than the Twig Moss colt experienced, prevailed by a half length. Mayfield-Smith artfully managed to get Marooned over the line in a Sydney Cup. The inexpensive Sangster import had a troublesome galloping action and was a crock in waiting.
Strategic placement in two penalty free conditioning events that the Mill Reef stallion won meant that Sangster prospered by playing up winnings collected on his longshot filly English Mint in the Storm Queen Stakes. Connections were aware that the Sir Tristram colt with the Star Kingdom influence on the maternal side had two small chips and that they would become a future problem. All of the major juvenile movers and shakers in four states and New Zealand were in the spotlight.
Mayfield-Smith was emphatic that his colt had to finish his preparation in the Todman and jump from no worse than gate Cassidy was suspended and Brian deliberately did not engage a jockey until after the six marble had been drawn.
Stand-in hoop Ron Quinton did the job in a stirring finish to edge out Lygon Arms and Boasting but was sent out because of severe interference to the Jim Atkins trained Prince Anton.
Kapstaad, because of a sale to New Zealand interest, was a withdrawal. He was still in the top five but gradually a burning desire to follow a profound passion for wildlife, its conservation and Africa itself consumed him.
He closed out the first part of his training career in the autumn of and with wife Maree covered the equivalent, distance wise, of 25 trips from Cairns to Brisbane, seeking a venue and the mechanics to create a tourist facility that could bankroll and feature a wildlife reserve. The prime mission failed because the boiling pot of politics, regulations, security, economics and qualifications was too hot to tame.
The couple returned home in April They revisited in and will do so again next month when much of their exploration will be over new ground. Brian opted to get back into the harness at Flemington in April and his first candidate Wry Hero proved he still had the knack. The Clay Hero gelding, resuming after a six month lay-off, mastered the straight six in stunning fashion in the July.
The following year, when many would have taken the risk, Mayfield-Smith informed Cup day stewards that Maybe Better seemed to have some foreleg fluid fill. Alas, the carefully constructed and conscientious campaign was dissolved at 1: Greatwall of China at Sandown in November is his most recent winner and Orange County, instands as the latest Group 1 thrill. Before leaving Cairns the Racing Queensland Hall of Fame inductee told his elderly mate Wally Holmes of his dual racing ambitions.
He did depose Tommy Smith and the outstanding issue is the Melbourne Cup. There are a few horses in work at Yea where Maybe Better and Rubitano are some of the animals living the life of Riley with the Mayfield-Smiths. David Copperfield, the Charles Dickens character was optimistic, diligent and persevering. The contemporary Copperfield is an entertaining illusionist.
When it comes to animals, Brian Mayfield-Smith has his own magic yet real touch and he applies it industriously to all manner of species.
The Macmillan publication was written to assist endangered animals. The text is a must-read for its detailed coverage of the African journeys. The introduction of the Benchmark races has allowed more horses the opportunity to compete in the Benchmark races due to the guidelines surrounding them. Benchmark races have no restrictions and every horse is eligible. These races are advantageous for open horses no longer competitive in that grade to drop back against restricted class horses.
These races give the stakeholder the option to race on and delay retirement of their horse. After understanding the concept and what rating their horse currently has, stakeholders will have an influence on what weight they will carry in these races. On the right is an example of a benchmark 70 race weighted at Julia Creek: Had a mare rated 70 been in this race she would have received 58kg and a filly This will allow some variance to the balloting conditions in that horses without any prizemoney earned at their past four starts will stand a significantly better chance of gaining a run, and when they do so will not be asked to compete against better performed rivals carrying the same weight.
The money bars have been raised for: The value of the prize to the winner shall not exceed: In a Class A race: Former barrier rogue Memorable Moment, ridden by Patrick Holmes, scores first-up from a month break at the Gold Coast in September Trackside photography photo Beaudesert trainer Tony Crane is reaping the rewards for all his hard work with former barrier rogue Memorable Moment. Crane produced the former Sydney sprinter off a month lay-off to win a Class 3 Plate m at the Gold Coast in mid-September and two starts later took the five-year-old to Eagle Farm where he landed a NMW Handicap.
He eventually was sent to Crane to see if he could transform the gelding. Gai thought he was potentially a Group 3 horse when she had him and David Pfieffer thought he was at least capable of winning a Listed race. Owners Steve Pamenter and John Elliott have had a terrific winning run with horses they purchased from Darley dispersal sales.
One of their latest buys, the Commands galloper Kiev, scored first-up at the Gold Coast last month. Kiev, out of the Zabeel mare Sybeel, had won one of his previous 13 starts for the massive Darley operation headed by trainer Peter Snowden.
We paid a bit more for this one Kiev but the success of Rhetoric and Straight helped us pay a bit more. The tour starts before the first race and takes approximately two hours. Although the log book does contain a detailed explanation, it is more effectively explained and discussed in person.
Therefore trainers will be briefed in person by instructor Lennie Maund about participation in trials, completing the purple covered log book, attendance in the jockey room for race day mentoring, completion of the RQL pre-race riding course and other requirements to commence race riding. If there are any issues with the requirements then alternative arrangements can be discussed. For example, trainee apprentices with limited access to official barrier trials can as now include suitable jumpouts.
A formula for this has been devised to ensure sufficient opportunity for the trainee to develop their skills and to be assessed. Emiratis have deep roots. He warned that any attempt to interfere in the country's internal affairs or sow dissent, sedition or anarchy will be punishable by law. They forget that the UAE is a country that welcomes everyone, provided that they respect the laws observed here, and they should not try to link the country to any foreign agenda. They express their personal opinions and issue their own Fatwas.
They have no right whatsoever to impose their own agenda on Emiratis regarding religion and laws. We are not going to compromise and we are not going to tolerate this. Sheikh Sultan called on the guardians to preserve good and national upbringing of children to eschew whatever mars the image of country, or impose the foreign agenda on the country. This is rejected as we will not allow them to tarnish the image of this country.
This is my message to all parents to look after their children and not to leave them alone. We should work hard to ward off seditions". Reacting to what he described as a "letter of instigation" sent recently to the Ruler's Court, Sheikh Sultan said UAE's journey to progress and prosperity was not paved with roses, adding that it is a deep-rooted country.
Sheikh Sultan added that "this country should be respected and not abused.OPPANA - Zabeel Staff Meet 2013
We are in a country that honours others, teach them, makes them equal with citizens and also naturalises them. We don't want the UAE's fate to be that of an ewe, which raised a wolf to turn against it and eat it when he wolf grew up. Sheikh Sultan referred to many prerogatives enjoyed by all people in the UAE, who should respect the country they live in, calling on all residents to respect the UAE's laws and values. He called on all to do what benefits people and not to follow the foreign agenda.
Even when they did, they used to go to the neighbouring countries looking for jobs and return back because their roots are deeply buried here and, he who has no loyalty to one's own home, has no roots. I wish to be heard by even those with little thinking. My concern is this country and citizens being young or adult.
It is a call for solidarity and good deeds". The delegation of the United Arab Emirates, included Dr. Speaking at the 51st ACI Financial Markets World Congress, Al Suwaidi said the banking industry across the world will be impacted by the stringent capital adequacy requirements under the Basel III and new international banking regulations.
Industrial activity and trading could face a shortage of funds. Fortunately, the UAE is doing well because of the strong trade and tourism sectors," said Al Suwaidi. Economists and analysts have recently cautioned that some Gulf economies could face funding gaps in the event of massive deleveraging and the consequent exit of European banks from funding in this region. Although the economic reliance on European bank funding varies across the GCC, international rating agency Moody's said in a recent report that a decrease in lending by European banks to the region could lead to a short-term liquidity squeeze and, more likely, a longer-term structural shortfall.
Likely new sources In order to meet this gap, local GCC banks would need to grow as well as adjust their own funding structures. Going forward, the rating agency said, Asian banks and bond markets are likely to be two major sources of foreign funding.
European banks' exit from the region has been driven by the ongoing euro area debt crisis and their need to deleverage and build up capital buffers to meet liquidity and capital adequacy requirements. Moody's assessment Based on the vulnerability to the funding gaps, Moody's has categorised the UAE and Qatar as economies that face moderate levels of vulnerability.
Analysts say the UAE credit growth is likely to remain under pressure this year as the debt restructuring of some government related entities GREs and high loans to deposit ratios are likely to limit the lending capacity of local banks. Improved liquidity UAE banks have materially improved their liquidity position since with liquid assets representing more than 23 per cent of total assets.
Al Suwaidi, however, said yesterday that the current rate of bank lending growth in the UAE is reasonable. The rate has been close to 3. Asked if the central bank had considered making the Chinese Yuan a part of its official reserves, Al Suwaidi said: On arrival in Kazakhstan, the Y1B satellite, which was air-freighted by the world's biggest aircraft built in Europe Antonovwill receive additional testing before it is moved to its final launch position.
